What is Dr. Pen microneedling?
During microneedling, the skin therapist uses the Dr. Pen to create very fine, controlled micro-channels in the skin. This activates the skin’s natural repair process, which can stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. Results build up gradually: your skin can become smoother, firmer and fresher.
SkinPen or Dr. Pen?
At Amsterdam Skin Clinic, you can choose between two microneedling treatments. Both are performed by a skin therapist and work on the same principle: fine needles create controlled micro-channels in the skin, activating its natural repair process. The difference lies in the device and the price.
SkinPen is the first microneedling device to be cleared by the US FDA, including for acne scars. It is specifically designed for clinical use and works with sterile needle cartridges that are replaced after every treatment. Want to get the most out of your treatment, for example for acne scars? Then the SkinPen is a great choice.
Dr. Pen works on the same principle and is also performed by our skin therapists. The treatment is more affordable, especially if you book 2 or 4 treatments at once. That way, you can complete a full course at a lower price.

Who is Dr. Pen microneedling suitable for?
The treatment is suitable for women and men with most skin types who want to improve their skin texture. In some situations, microneedling is not suitable, or not suitable for the time being. For example, with certain skin conditions, inflammation or wounds in the treatment area, or when using certain medications. The skin therapist will assess this during the consultation.
Personal and free consultation for Dr. Pen microneedling
Every microneedling treatment at Amsterdam Skin Clinic starts with a personal, free consultation. During this consultation, the skin therapist assesses your skin, discusses your wishes and gives honest advice about the options and the results you can expect. This way, you know in advance whether microneedling is suitable for your skin and which approach best fits your situation. There is no obligation: you always decide for yourself whether you want to go ahead with the treatment.
How the Dr. Pen treatment works
Your skin is first cleansed and prepared. The skin therapist then applies a suitable serum and treats the area with the Dr. Pen. This feels like light pricking and is generally well tolerated. Finally, your skin is soothed with SkinCeuticals products.
After the treatment, your skin is usually red for about a day and may feel warm. In the days that follow, it may feel slightly dry or flake a little.
Dr. Pen side effects and aftercare
The most common reactions are temporary redness, swelling, sensitivity and dry skin. In rarer cases, an infection, a reaction to a product or temporary changes in pigmentation may occur, particularly with sun exposure after the treatment.
For the best recovery:
- No smoking, alcohol or exercise for the first 24 hours
- Stay out of the sun and avoid sunbeds for two weeks
- No sauna, spa or hammam for 48 hours
- No other facial treatments, laser treatments or peels for at least two weeks

What is the difference between Dr. Pen and SkinPen?
Both treatments work on the same principle and are performed by a skin therapist. The Dr. Pen treatment is slightly more affordable than a SkinPen treatment. During the consultation, we will discuss which option suits you best.
How do the packages work?
If you choose 2 or 4 treatments, you pay less per session. Treatments are usually scheduled around four weeks apart.
Does microneedling with the Dr. Pen hurt?
It feels like light pricking, but is rarely experienced as painful. The skin therapist adjusts the treatment to your comfort level.
How many treatments do I need?
A course of around four treatments is usually recommended. The exact number depends on your skin and your goals.
When will I see results?
Results build up gradually in the weeks after the treatment and become more visible once the course is complete.
Is microneedling suitable for all skin types?
For most skin types, yes. With darker skin types, extra caution is needed because of the risk of pigmentation changes. The skin therapist will assess this beforehand.
